Experience the Giarratana Onion Festival with authentic flavors, Sicilian traditions, and a unique atmosphere that captivates every visitor
Giarratana Onion Festival
The Onion Festival takes place annually on August 14 in Giarratana, a town of very ancient origins well known for its onion production. For the occasion, stalls are set up along the streets of the town, where this vegetable is cooked and served in every possible and imaginable way, both cooked and raw, accompanied by typical cheeses and excellent wine.
The atmosphere is authentic, with baroque surroundings and a mountain feel. The festival is an opportunity for thousands of tourists to taste this very flavorful vegetable, white in color and flattened in shape, which in Giarratana is truly unique. Craft market, folklore, and music
The onion from this mountain town is one of a kind, flat and incredibly sweet. It is a typical product of Giarratana, an original variety that is fleshier and lighter than more common table varieties, and can weigh up to three hundred grams. Its large size represents its uniqueness. For once, it is she—the "Cinderella" of the kitchen—who becomes the star of the celebration: the onion, while music, sounds, art, and fireworks form its backdrop.
Tradition, sustainability, and enhancement of the territory: the festival tells the agricultural and cultural identity of the most authentic Sicily.
