“Laghetti of Avola and Cavagrande”

“The natural paradise hidden within the gorges of Avola.”

“An authentic experience among trekking routes, waterfalls, and ancient Sicilian cliffs.”

“Laghetti di Avola and Cavagrande: where nature carves emotions in a paradise of water and rock”

1. Where they are located and what Cavagrande is

We are in the province of Siracusa, inland from Avola, along the valley of the Cassibile River.

The Cavagrande del Cassibile Nature Reserve covers about 2,760 hectares and a stretch of about 10 km of the river, which here has carved a true canyon up to 200–250 m deep.
The “Laghetti di Avola” are natural pools and small waterfalls formed by the river on the valley floor: emerald green water, white limestone rocks, lush vegetation.

2. Landscape features

River canyon: terraced limestone walls with panoramic views from above (Cavagrande viewpoint).
Crystal-clear water: the natural pools are fed by small waterfalls, with varying depths, and are used for swimming in summer.
Vegetation: oleanders, oriental plane trees, tamarisks, reeds, Mediterranean scrub (mastic, myrtle, phillyrea).
Fauna: birds of prey (buzzards, kestrels), water birds (mallards, herons), small mammals and reptiles; butterflies and dragonflies are very common along the pools.

3. Historical and archaeological value

In the Cavagrande valley you can find:
Rock-cut necropolises dating back to the Bronze Age and the pre-Greek Sicel civilization.
The Dieri rock complex and other inhabited and funerary cavities, reachable only with challenging treks and often with a specialized guide.
The so-called Brigands' Cave / Cunsirìa, a system of connected cavities used in Byzantine times and later (according to tradition) as a refuge for brigands in the 19th century.

4. Main trails and access points

Attention: in recent years some “historic” paths have often been closed or restricted for safety reasons (landslides, fires). Local websites and forestry authorities periodically update the situation.

a) “Scala Cruci” Trail (classic access to the Laghetti di Avola)
It is the most famous route, starting from the Cavagrande Viewpoint area (Avola Antica).
Significant elevation change: a fairly quick descent (30–45 minutes), but a very strenuous ascent, with steep sections and uneven steps.
It leads directly to the most famous pools, where natural basins and small rocky beaches are formed.
In the past, this trail was often closed for safety reasons; currently, many tour operators propose alternatives such as the Carrubbella trail.

b) “Mastra Ronna” Trail
Access from SP 73 Canicattini–Stallaini–Cassibile, in the Canicattini area.
The first part runs along an ancient mule track, then a narrower and steeper section leads toward the canyon floor.
It offers very wild environments, clear water, lush vegetation, and great tranquility (less crowded than Scala Cruci).

c) “Prisa–Carrubbella” Trail (Timpa ca’ tona)
It is now one of the officially open routes, also used by nature guides.
It starts from the Avola–Cavagrande area; after the junction for the main access to the pools, continue straight and then along a dirt road to the beginning of the trail.
It leads to a smaller but spectacular lake, called “timpa ca’ tona” (resonant stone).

5. Trail difficulty

In general:
Difficulty level: from intermediate to challenging; it is not a simple walk.
Terrain: dirt and rocky paths, slippery sections, and steep slopes; trekking shoes with good grip are recommended.
Climate: in summer the heat is intense, especially during the central hours; the climb back from the valley floor can be strenuous. It is essential to start early and bring plenty of water.
For more difficult areas (Dieri, lesser-known zones) a certified hiking guide is highly recommended.

6. What you can do at the Laghetti di Avola

Swimming and relaxation
The water in the pools is cold but very clean — a pleasant relief during the summer season.
Many visitors lie on the flat rocks around the pools and use the waterfalls as natural hydromassage.
Trekking and hiking
Half-day or full-day routes with significant elevation changes.
Guided treks are available, combining panoramic views, descent, stops at the pools, and ascent.
Nature observation and photography
An excellent spot for landscape photography, wildlife, macro photography of butterflies, and riparian flora.
Archaeology and history
With specialized guides, you can visit rock-cut necropolises and hypogeal complexes (when and where access is allowed).

7. Rules, protection, and safety

The reserve is a protected area: lighting fires, camping, littering, and damaging flora and fauna are prohibited.
Due to fires and landslides, some trails may be closed or partially restricted: before planning an excursion, it is advisable to check updates from the Forestry Service or local guides.
In summer: hat, sunscreen, plenty of water; avoid the hottest hours and pay attention during the ascent, especially with children or untrained people.

8. Practical tips (especially for transfer/service purposes)

If you offer or organize NCC/transfer services in the area:
Typical arrival points: Cavagrande Viewpoint / Avola Antica or Mastra Ronna / Carrubbella access (depending on the chosen trek).
It is advisable to coordinate with local hiking guides who can inform you about:
trail conditions (open/closed);
recommended times;
average trekking duration, so you can manage return times effectively.
Best times: spring (more water, milder temperatures) and early/late summer; in mid-August it is very crowded and hot.
