Ryanair ends paper boarding passes
Ryanair eliminates paper boarding passes: digital only from November 12
No more paper boarding passes
Starting Wednesday, November 12, 2025, Ryanair will move to 100% Digital Boarding Passes. It will no longer be possible to download or print your boarding pass as a PDF, since check-in will generate only a digital boarding pass in the myRyanair app.
The stated goal is to simplify airport processes, provide real-time operational updates, and reduce paper use (by up to 300 tons per year), with over 80% of passengers already using mobile boarding passes.
What changes in practice
- Check-in: remains online (website or app). However, the boarding pass will only be visible and valid in the myRyanair app.
- At the airport: show your digital boarding pass at security and at the gate. No more “print at home.”
- Help in case of issues: if you arrive at the gate without phone access after checking in online, staff can assist with a reprint or emergency solution at the airport (this is exceptional, for malfunctions or unforeseen events).
- Extra app features: live gate and delay notifications, alternatives in case of disruption, “order-to-seat” for onboard bars, and travel documents all in one place.
Exceptions (where paper is still required)
Due to local regulations, some airports still require printed boarding passes:
- Morocco (all airports)
- Turkey (all airports except Dalaman)
- Tirana → flights to the UK (until March 2026)
Tip: if you’re departing from one of these airports, check the latest Ryanair guidance and allow extra time for possible visa/document checks.
Why this change
- Operational efficiency: fewer queues and faster gate management.
- Customer experience: real-time updates on gates, delays, and rebookings directly on your phone.
- Sustainability: elimination of around 300 tons of paper per year.
What passengers need to do (quick checklist)
1. Download/update the myRyanair app before travel and log in.
2. Complete online check-in (via website or app). Your boarding pass will be added to the app.
3. Save the boarding pass for offline use (screenshot or wallet if available) to avoid connectivity issues.
4. Charge your phone and bring a power bank.
5. Check any visa/document requirements: if you have a “Visa/Document Check,” go to the desk at least 2 hours before departure.
6. Country exceptions: if departing from Morocco, Turkey (except Dalaman), or Tirana to the UK, bring a printed boarding pass as required locally.
Implications for families, groups, and less digital travelers
- One device for multiple passes: you can display several boarding passes on one phone (useful for minors or group travel).
- Plan B: if your phone fails after online check-in, airport staff can assist with emergency solutions; however, it’s strongly advised to have a power bank and save passes offline.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I still receive the boarding pass as a PDF by email?
No. Ryanair no longer provides printable PDFs; the boarding pass is digital-only in the app, except for the listed country exceptions.
If I check in via the website, how do I access my boarding pass?
Your valid boarding pass will appear in the myRyanair app linked to your booking. After check-in, open the app to view it.
I don’t have a smartphone – can I still fly?
Ryanair encourages use of the app and no longer issues “print at home” passes. In exceptional cases, after online check-in, airport staff may assist, but this is an emergency solution only. Always check the latest rules before traveling.
