Brief History of the Zingaro Nature Reserve
The Zingaro Oriented Nature Reserve lies along the coast between Scopello and San Vito Lo Capo, in the province of Trapani, and was the first nature reserve established in Sicily.
Until the 1970s, this area was inhabited and used by local communities for agriculture, pastoralism, and fishing. The land was crossed by ancient paths and characterized by rural houses, mills, and small settlements.
In the 1970s and 1980s, the area was threatened by urban development projects and the construction of a coastal road. Strong public and environmental activism led to the protection of the area, which was officially designated a nature reserve in 1981.
Today, the Zingaro Nature Reserve stands as a successful example of environmental conservation, with over 7 kilometers of protected coastline, panoramic trails, pristine coves, and extraordinary biodiversity, making it one of the most beloved natural destinations in Western Sicily.
